What does a kitchen remodel cost?

Most full kitchen remodels with pbd run $65,000 to $110,000. Smaller updates that keep the existing layout start around $30,000. Your price depends mainly on cabinets, countertops and how much the layout changes.

What moves the price:

  • Cabinets: how many, and whether they’re new, semi-custom or your existing cabinets refinished
  • Countertops: the stone you choose and how much of it, including islands and full-height backsplashes
  • Layout: moving a wall, a sink or a range adds framing, plumbing, gas and electrical work
  • Finishes: flooring, lighting, hardware and appliances

We give you a clear, written price before work begins, and we walk you through where you can save. On our Naperville project below, reusing and repainting the existing cabinets put the budget into a new island, counters and custom built-ins.

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

About 3 to 4 months from signed contract to finished kitchen. Plan on about 1 month for design and ordering selections, then about 2 to 3 months without a working kitchen while we build. Inspections are the main thing that moves the schedule.

How it works, step by step:

  1. Free consultation. We visit your home, talk through what you want and how you use your kitchen, and take measurements.
  2. Design. You meet our designer, Nate, by video call. He designs and renders your whole kitchen so you see it before anything is built.
  3. Selections. You pick cabinets, countertops, tile and hardware at our partner showrooms, with our guidance.
  4. Price and contract. You get a written price, and we order materials once you sign.
  5. Permits. We pull the required permits for your project.
  6. Build. Our crews and long-time trade partners handle demolition, framing, plumbing, electrical, cabinets, counters and finishes, with an update from us every day.
  7. Inspections. We handle the inspections, start to finish.
  8. Final walkthrough. We walk the finished kitchen with you and fix anything on the punch list. Your one-year warranty starts that day.

Your kitchen, designed before it's built

Every pbd kitchen starts with a full design. Nate, our designer, meets with you by video call and renders the whole kitchen, so you can see the layout, cabinets and finishes before anything is ordered. Once you approve the design, our cabinet partners adjust it to our field measurements so everything fits the room exactly.

Where you’ll make your selections:

  • Cabinets: Procraft Cabinetry, Americraft Cabinetry in Downers Grove, or Harris Cabinetry in Plainfield
  • Countertops: stone slabs at MSI in Elk Grove Village or SV Stone in Melrose Park
  • Tile and flooring: The Tile Shop in Naperville
  • Hardware and fixtures: Studio 41, including a guided selection experience for higher-end products

You’re never on your own in a showroom. We tell you what fits your design and your budget before you go.

Custom painted range hood in a Naperville kitchen remodel

Before: the original kitchen

Featured project: a Naperville kitchen, opened up and reimagined

This family wanted an open, island-centered kitchen without paying for all-new cabinets. We kept almost every original cabinet, remounted them in new spots, and put the budget where it shows.

  • Opened the layout: removed a partial wall to center the kitchen on a new island
  • Moved the range: relocated the oven with a new gas line and heavy-duty outlet, under a custom range hood painted to match the cabinets
  • Reused the cabinets: remounted the existing cabinets (some moved to the basement), added a few new ones, and painted them all, with the island in a contrasting color and pull-out shelves in both pantries
  • Custom details: crown molding on the cabinets, a beam wrapped in matching trim, and a custom upholstered banquette with a quartz dining table to match the counters
  • Counters: quartz throughout, with full-height slab backsplash and an island with waterfall ends and a 3-inch mitered edge on the seating side
  • Finishing touches: under-cabinet lighting, outlet strips tucked under the upper cabinets, and hardwood patched where cabinets had stood
